Dry Eye Treatment by Vancouver Eye Doctor at Wesbrook Eyecare Optometry

WHAT IS DRY EYE SYNDROME?
Dry Eye Syndrome is the most common eye disorder and affects about 20% of the population. It is caused by an imbalance in the tear film of the eye. This imbalance is usually caused by clogged oil glands called meibomian glands that lie along the upper and lower lid margins.Meibomian gland dysfunction contribute to almost 90% of ocular surface disease (OSD) progression and Dry Eye Syndrome. Chronic blockage or thickening of the meibum can impede the ability of the oil glands to produce or secrete the oil that is essential in preventing the rapid evaporation of tears. As a result, the inadequacy of this essential oil component can affect the quality and stability of the tear film. This consequently leads to dry eye symptoms.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?
The most common symptoms of Dry Eye Syndrome (DES) include but not limited to the following:
*redness, *irritation, *burning, *scratchiness, *painful eyes, *watery eyes, *foreign body sensation
**Please note that severe dry eye disease can damage the surface layers of front of the eyes (cornea) and impair your vision. Depending on the severity of your symptoms, the doctor will recommend different treatment solutions for your dry eyes.

WHAT ARE THE RISK FACTORS FOR OSD /DES?
Age (35 years old or greater), Gender (more common in women), Diet (Alcohol and caffeine, and inadequate water intake), Medications (antihistamines, decongestants, antidepressants, hypertension, diabetes), Medical conditions (arthritis, diabetes, thyroid), Environmental conditions (increased screen time, smoke, wind, dry air, heat), Long term use of contact lenses, Eye surgeries (LASIK, PRK, cataracts)

WHAT ARE THE TREATMENTS OF DRY EYES?

NOW OFFERING: a new technology for dry eyes and skin tightening

"PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE"

Desiderius Erasmus

Stop Suffering Now! Affordable Clinically-Proven Treatment for Dry Eyes Now Available in Our Clinics!!

WHAT IS TempSure Envi TREATMENT?
TempSure Envi is a new radiofrequency (RF) treatment that treats dry eyes to improve ocular comfort and perhaps free you from using eye drops and/or omega-3 supplements! As an added bonus, this advanced and new technology for dry eyes can also minimize facial fine lines, wrinkles, tightens skin and improves the appearance of cellulite.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
TempSure Envi delivers RF technology to gently heat your skin, increasing the skin's temperature for a defined, therapeutic time.

Dry Eye Therapy - This RF technology allows us to target, heat, and liquefy the meibum in the obstructed oil glands that lie within the eyelids and in the process, enabling these glands to release these oils back into the tear film, essential for dry eye recovery. This process improves the function and health of the meibomian glands. Once these oil glands resume normalcy or have improvement, a healthier tear film with less tear evaporation will be restored. Meibomian Gland Disorder (MGD) is the leading cause of dry eyes and discomfort in the eye area. Restoration of these meibomian glands is therefore crucial in the treatment of dry eye syndrome.

Skin Benefits -This technology also triggers a natural response for your skin to create new collagen and stimulate elastin production. The new collage fibers are tight, dense, and neatly organized giving you a tighter, younger-looking skin! The RF technology is a non-invasive cosmetic skin treatment that has been used for years in dermatology and aesthetics as it reduces fine lines and wrinkles.

TempSure Envi FAQs

How long are the treatments?
Depending on the treatment zone, the treatments can be anywhere between 30-90 minutes.

Is this right for me?
Tempsure Envi is a safe procedure that is suitable for all skin types and pigmentations. After the treatments you can resume your daily activities right away with no downtime.

How many treatments are needed?
We recommend at least 3 treatments spaced 6 weeks apart for the maximum benefit.

Does it hurt?
Our patients often describe the treatment as a relaxing, hot stone massage.

What are your problem areas?
Application areas besides the eye areas include forehead lines, frown lines, crow's feet, smile lines, wrinkles in the chin, and cellulite on the body.

When will I see results?
Although it varies with each person, the great news is you'll likely see results after your first treatment but best after three treatments. Your dry eyes should be reduced and your natural collagen starts to tighten upon being treated. Our patients often notice an initial glow and tightening of the skin. You may notice a reduction in those fine lines. Over the next weeks and months, your ocular comfort would improve and new collagen starts to form to help further reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

Cataract Treatment by Vancouver Optometrist at Wesbrook Eyecare Optometry - Eye Clinic Vancouver

Cataracts are a leading cause of vision issues for people over 40 and are one of the main causes of blindness. A cataract is a clouding of the eye, specifically in the eye’s lens behind the pupil, caused by proteins clumping together. There are different kinds of cataracts, and they can have different causes. Aging or other medical conditions can contribute to the development of cataracts in your eyes.

Cataracts can start small and develop slowly. It may not even be noticeable at first, or you may notice a slight blur to your vision. You may only notice symptoms when looking at bright lights. Cataracts can continue to worsen, and you may only feel the effects once it is well developed.

There are many conditions or factors that can lead to cataracts. Regular eye exams and consultations with your optometrist are the best methods of identifying cataracts. If cataracts have developed in your eyes, cataract surgery may be helpful to restore your vision. The surgery is generally successful and the clouded lens can be removed. If you may have cataracts, contact us at (604) 558-3937 today to discuss your options with our optometrists.

Eye Exam in Vancouver by Eye Doctors at Wesbrook Eyecare Optometry

Everyone needs regular eye exams. It’s important for adults to schedule eye exams to monitor their eye health and check for problems. Conditions that are often detected during eye exams include glaucoma, macular degeneration, cataracts, and diabetic retinopathy. Early detection of these conditions allows for the widest range of treatment options and the best chance of slowing or reversing any symptoms.

While children often get their scheduled exams during pediatrician visits, adults have to remember to make time for check-ups. This is especially important for adults who have a family history of eye problems or have higher risk factors such as diabetes, high blood pressure, work conditions, or medications. All adults should have their eyes examined every two years, and those with eye or vision issues should visit their optometrist yearly or bi-yearly.

Lasik Eye Surgery Vancouver by Eye Doctors at Wesbrook Eyecare Optometry

LASIK stands for laser in-situ keratomileusis and is a popular surgery to correct vision problems. LASIK can help people who are nearsighted or farsighted, as well as those who have astigmatism.

LASIK works by reshaping the cornea with a laser, which allows light to be correctly focused onto the retina. A laser is used to create a small flap is in the cornea, which is peeled back so another laser can reshape the cornea. The flap is then placed back and the surgery is complete.

LASIK is popular because it is a quick procedure with a high success rate. The surgery takes about 10 minutes and only requires local anesthesia in the form of eye drops. LASIK does not typically involve much pain and does not require stitches or bandages. The results are often immediate and adjustments can be made in the future to correct vision if there are any changes.

While rare, there are downsides and potential side effects to LASIK, which is why you should consult with your optometrist to see if the procedure is right for you. At Wesbrook Eyecare, we will discuss what to expect before and after LASIK. Contact us at (604) 558-3937 today to learn how LASIK could work for you.

Computer Vision Syndrome Treatment by Vancouver Optometrist at Wesbrook Eyecare Optometry

Here at Wesbrook Eye Care, we are dedicated to helping patients with computer vision syndrome.

Computer vision syndrome is relatively new. It refers to eye problems associated with the prolonged use of computers and electronics that use a digital screen. Although it can be temporary, there are times when it can strain your eyes to a degree that permanently affects your vision.

If you suffer from an existing eye condition, it can worsen your computer vision syndrome. This is because it can be difficult for your eyes to focus on the computer screen. One of these conditions is astigmatism. Even though they suffer from this condition, many people feel normal until they sit in front of a computer.

Precautions should be taken if you spend long hours in front of a computer screen. Proper lighting and posture can make a difference. You might also want to adjust your screen’s resolution and check the brightness and contrast. A few simple changes like these can help to ease the tension in your eyes. You should also take breaks if you are going to spend a few hours in front of your computer.

Some signs of computer vision syndrome include blurry vision, dry eyes, eye strain, headaches, and neck or back pain. At first, you should try adjusting the lighting, your posture, and the distance between you and the front of your computer screen. However, if you continue to experience symptoms, you should have an eye examination.

After your examination, we will be able to discuss the best method for treating your digital eye strain so it does not become an ongoing issue and lead to a bigger problem. There are specially made glasses for people who spend hours in front of the computer, so that might be an option for you.

If you have any questions about computer vision syndrome, don’t hesitate to contact us today at (604) 558-3937

Contact Lens Exam at Wesbrook Eyecare Optometry by Vancouver Eye Doctors

The field of optometry changes quickly, and now many more patients are able to enjoy the flexibility of wearing contact lenses to correct their vision. Contact lens exams include tests that are not always performed in regular eye exams, so if you are considering contact lenses, be sure to let us know when you schedule your exam. This allows us to schedule the extra time required for contact lens fitting or prescription updates.

Scheduling your general eye exam and your contact lens exam for the same visit will save you time and money. Performing these exams at different locations or with different optometrists can lead to repeated tests and additional fees.

Our contact lens exams include questions about your lifestyle and the various options available to you. There are a variety of contact lenses on the market that can be changed at different frequencies: daily, weekly, monthly. Rigid gas-permeable (RGP or GP) contact lenses are an option that often provides sharper vision than traditional soft lenses. Bifocal contact lenses are an option to correct vision issues that develop with age (presbyopia). So is monovision, which is a special technique where one eye corrects for distance vision and the other eye corrects for near vision. Some contacts even allow you to change eye color.

Contact us at (604) 558-3937 today to schedule a contact lens exam today.

Glaucoma Treatment by Vancouver Optometrist at Wesbrook Eyecare Optometry Clinic

Glaucoma describes eye disorders that involve damage to the optic nerve, which sends visual signals from your eye to your brain. This loss of nerve tissue can result in loss of vision.

Primary open-angle glaucoma is one of the most common disorders. It results from an increased pressure inside the eye, which can cause damage to the optic nerve. A damaged nerve can lead to vision loss or even blindness. This pressure can build slowly and be difficult to detect in everyday life. It may start by affecting only your peripheral vision.

Pressure is not the only indicator of glaucoma, as high pressure does not always lead to glaucoma and glaucoma can develop in spite of normal eye pressure. Anyone can develop glaucoma, although it is most common in people over 40.

Acute angle closure glaucoma is not as common, but can develop much more quickly. If you are experiencing intense eye pain, redness in your eye, blurred vision, or nausea, you may need immediate medical attention. This form of glaucoma is an emergency and needs to be treated right away.

There is no way to completely prevent glaucoma, but early diagnosis and treatment can help control the condition and limit its effects. Often times medication or surgery can help reduce the damage, but glaucoma cannot be reversed. For this reason, at Wesbrook Eye Care we regularly test for glaucoma and recommend frequent eye exams. Factors such as age, race, family history, and previous medical conditions can all contribute to developing glaucoma.

At Wesbrook Eye Care, we use tonometry to measure the pressure inside your eye and pachymetry to measure corneal thickness. We also examine your field of vision and the retina of your eye.

Treatment for glaucoma may start with prescription eye drops that help manage the pressure in your eyes. Other treatments may include medication, surgery, or implants. Because treatment is ongoing, it is important that your optometrist detect any changes in your eye health. Regular eye exams are essential to managing glaucoma, which is a lifelong issue.

If you may be at risk for glaucoma, contact us at (604) 558-3937 today to discuss your eye health.

Myopia Control Using Ortho-K in Eye Clinic Vancouver at Wesbrook Eyecare Optometry

With the increased use of computers and television, it is no surprise that people are getting eye or vision problems. You will find even a small kid below the age of ten wearing specs which, was not common some years ago. So, what should people do? Just accept its life and move on?

Well, at this age and time, it is impossible to advise people to stop using computers or spending too much time on television, phones or iPad especially since most jobs are now done using computers. The only thing that can be done is to find a solution for the problem, and that is where orthokeratology comes in.

What is Orthokeratology?
Orthokeratology is a non-surgical procedure that involves creating gas permeable lenses that alter the shape of the cornea to reduce effects of myopia, astigmatism, and hyperopia. It eliminates the need of wearing glasses since all you need to do is put on the contact lenses at night, and in the morning your eyes will have a clear vision.

Unlike having standard specs or undergoing eye surgery, orthokeratology gives you the freedom to engage in things such as contact or water sports given that your eyes have perfect vision during the day. Orthokeratology is more than just any eye procedure. Research shows that it is very effective in vision therapy even for people who have lost all hope seeking treatment.

What is vision therapy?
Just as the name suggests, vision therapy is a form of physical exercise for the eyes. But do not think it is just any kind of eye exercise used to strengthen your eye muscles. Vision therapy must be under the supervision of a doctor, and it must be designed specifically for each and every person since needs vary. Once you start vision therapy, you will be required to have weekly sessions of about thirty minutes to one hour.

Vision therapy is recommended for people with lazy eyes, double vision, crossed eyes, reading and learning disabilities, and convergence insufficiency among others. Also, it aids in interpreting visual information. People who have been told that there is no hope for their eye problems, can give vision therapy a chance and see if there will be any different. Historically, vision therapy has been known to treat even hopeless eye problems.

When you visit an orthokeratology, a few tests are done to see if your eyes are fit for the procedure. Once the doctor is assured that you can use the contact lenses, he or she will instruct you on how to use it, and after the first night of wearing them, you will be required to go for a check up to see if there is any change. If the lenses are not as useful as they are supposed to be, your orthokeratology can modify the lenses.

Orthokeratology has been seen to produce results in a very short time. However, the time taken to get effective results varies from one person to another.

Sports Vision Treatment by Vancouver Eye Doctors at Wesbrook Eyecare Optometry

Here at Wesbrook Eye Care, we are dedicated to working with athletes to ensure that they have good vision.

Athletes need good vision to be able to succeed in their sport. They also need to have healthy eyes to ensure victory.

For this reason, we are proud to offer sports vision therapy. There are times when an athlete’s vision can be improved without wearing glasses. We use therapy to strengthen areas your eyes that may have become weakened. We also use therapy to improve your reaction and timing so that your eyes will be stronger than most people’s.

Sports vision training involves high-level eye tracking, depth perception, and hand-eye coordination. Many athletes practice these exercises to keep their eyes in peak condition.

Since there are many different exercises and everyone has different needs, we have to perform some testing first. We need to determine how your eyes will function beyond the realm of normal activity before we customize a program to strengthen your vision based on your level of activity.

If you are interested in learning what training method would be best for you, please contact our office today at (604) 558-3937.
